Evaluation 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from the full product?

Evaluation 7

In this progression I have learned a lot of new things, how to use the equipment properly, how to use the editing programmes on the computer and import music and pictures to the clips. It was really fun and interesting all of it. We also did a Continuity editing right at the start of this project, Even thought that was the easiest task, however it was still really hard to do, It took quite a while to get all the camera angles right and place the camera's in the correct place. We also had to do a shot reverse shot, but when we imported the recorded clip onto the computer, we realised we haven’t done that, and that was the main part of the whole continuity exercise.

However after we finished all of our film and the editing to it, we had time to do the continuity filming again. This time it went quite well and much easier than before, as we now knew how to use all the camera's correctly, and knew all our angles, and what should go where.

I have really enjoyed all of it. And my skills also have improved much more, and also I enjoyed working as a team sharing and gaining ideas. It was a real good experience.

These are some screenshots, from our first continuity editing practise.

Here are some of the pictures we took from our first Continuity editing, as it wouldn't let me upload the video itself. I also added some pictures of our 2nd continuity filming above, the 3 on the right hand side of the page. We used pretty much the same angles; however we added the shot reverse shot and some High angles, match on action.

We had to make another one, as the first one we made, we forgot to include match on action and shot reverse shots. We also tried to include some more Shots like we had some panning, and some High angles

Evaluation 6

What have you learnt about the technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation 6

We have used a variety of new technologies and learned how to use theme correctly. We have used a tripod; this is a three-legged stand for supporting the camera. This helped us keep the camera stable without wobbling, also this helped us do panning and tilts of the scene or the characters, it was very easy to use and when finished very easy to fold in and carry around.

We have also of course used a camcorder to record the film, very easy to use small and handy to carry around with you. Back in a couple of years they didn’t have all these simply handy equipment for use, they only had the noisy, heavy camera's the drag around with them, thanks to technology made it much easier and efficient for us. All of my group members had an ago at filming with the camcorder.

We also used a scanner to scan our storyboard onto the computer and uploaded to our blogs, Again very simple and easy, however even thought it scanned both of our storyboard onto the Pc one of them wouldn’t upload itself onto our blogs.

We also made quite a lot of use of YouTube to upload our film song from there and also websites to find the right font for our titles that fits the theme of the film. However my other group members had the video uploading button work, but my blog it's really strange it wouldn't let me do it, so I just had to upload some pictures from Google, which is very simple and straight forward to use.

And of course not to forget blogger itself, it's so easy now coursework done on the internet, how simple and efficient, this is also much more easier for the students, this encourages them even more to get it done, instead of papers and papers of work.

Evaluation 5

How did you Attract/Adress your audience?

Evaluation 5

We brought a group of people to watch our film and tell us what appealed to them and what they found could be improved.

First we asked, what really appealed to you in this short intro?

They said; the change of scenery at the beginning really has appealed to them, when Billy skates over the camera and then moves to the scene , Which inludes a sound bridge, this is when the sound carries onto the second scene. where Tom is walking to his destination.
They liked the idea of it as some have seen it in some films.

2nd we asked, if they found that the music fits our theme?

They said; yes it did, they loved the music as a fact, they said it really fits the theme as it's the gangster, rap, fast music. Which goes with the whole younger generation teenagers theme.
They also loved how we got the idea of when Billy places the headphone in his ears the music starts, then when he takes them off the music stops.

Then we asked what camera angles or shots you found good?

They said; they loved the low angle used when Billy stood on top of the stairs of the underpass, "it looked really good".
Also others said they loved the part when he was holding the camera (handheld) and was walking down the stairs, it gave them the feeling of fear, and what happened next. Some also liked the part when Billy got stabbed; they said the angle it was taken from (high angle) looked really good, because if we had a closer shot it wouldn’t look real.

And finally we asked them, what do you think could be improved if we had to do it again?

They said; when Tom and Billy had the conversation, we could of had a voiceover as you couldn’t hear it properly. They also said maybe Billy could've screamed or made a noise when he got stabbed to build up the tension in the scene a bit more.

And finally some said at the end when he gets stabbed make it clearer, so we know why he stabbed him.

But overall they said they thought it was "really good" and would want to watch the film and see what happened next.

Evaluation 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation 4

The typical target audience member would be Teenagers from the age of 15 up to maybe the age of 18/19, this is because our film is similar to all the other crime/gangster younger generation films, such as Shifty, This is England, Adulthood and Kidulthood, However in our Film we didn’t include any strong language as in all the others there is. This also reflects how the younger generation behaviour has become more violent, dangerous, use of strong language. We also wanted to bring something good into it. Also the music we have used Snoop Dogg Ft Dr Dre older aged people wouldn’t find this too appealing however younger age groups would, example the groups we have asked the first thing they commented on was the music " I love that song" they said.

They would listen to music such as Snoop Dogg, Jay Z and Timberland, however the elder aged people would find country song and classical more appealing.
The same also counts with films, like I mention some names above, even TV Drama's such as Skins and Waterloo Rd. It’s the stereotypical Thoughts off all teenagers and younger people, of how they find such things catching their interest, Drugs, Murderer etc.

Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Production, Distribution and Exhibition play a big role in making a film. However, because some films are produced on a small budget they won't be able to afford Distribution such as marketing and advertising their films. This could be as in posters or on the internet. Such as Shifty was one of those films, it didn't have enough money for advertising their film so not many people knew about it; however it got more famous when it came out on DVD, and more people bought it. Also they had free screenings to attract more viewers to come and see it. We also went to watch it with our media class. I really enjoyed it even thought the film was produced on a low budget it didn't look like it.

Eran Creevy Was the director/writer of the film, he could also be a good director to manage our film, because it got similar idea, stories to it.

Slumdog Millionaire was also one of the most successful British films produced on a low budget of £8.7 Million. Although as it was released and showed up on 2,943 screens, and at the end of the UK cinema release, Slumdog made £31,000,000.

Our Film could be supported by the UKFC it’s the government backed lead agency for film in the UK, they make sure that the economic, culture and educational aspect of the film are effectively represented. They support a group of people who come together and want to make a film; they give them an certain amount of a budget.
This could be good for ours as we are not capable for a film with a high budget.

However not all British films are produced on a low budget, and supported by well known
Institution. Such as working title is one of the biggest, most known British film companies. It works with universal studios to produce some good quality films to target a large audience America, Europe to help with funding.

Such as the film the boat that rocked was funded by this company; however in America they changed the film's name to Pirate Radio also their trailer, was changed in the US focused on the American actor even though he wasn't the main character.

The very good thing about if this company funded our film, more people would want to watch it, as the company funded it has a reputation bigger name. So the company name also place a big role, because at the end most people also look at what company funded the film.

The producers and directors of our film, It's me (Azza), fabienne G, and Tom T. We worked together as a team and shared our ideas.

If we had the budget to advertise it, I think my group would do it on the internet, as it shares it’s global also because our film is focused for younger people. Teenagers and they use the internet mostly which they find it easy to access.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups

In our opening we play very much on stereotypes to represent the social group of our choice.
Class is also a very important representation of our characters, as we made them working class, as they are more related to crime and such,  a higher class person stays away from thing such as murder, crime etc. We chose working class because it is the class that is linked to crime due the urban settings and maybe the lack of morals.
Also our characters in the short intro were young; as it's the stereotypical idea of that the younger generation are the ones who are behind all of the trouble such as drugs murderer etc.
We also chose to set one of the settings, in an underpass, as higher class people wouldn’t even come near it. As it also known as a dangerous place only younger people and homeless spent time in there.

Our main Character in the short opening is Billy, even thought he gets killed at the end. He could be related to many characters such as Freddie from skins. As he wears the baggie hoodies and the baggy jeans.

Evaluation 1

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms of conventions of real media products?

In our film we have used the idea of the young teenagers now we represent them in a good way, but also in the way teens are represented in the media, and how they use them in other films such as Adulthood, Shifty etc. The aggressiveness, danger they because we thought those types of films appealed to us so we want to make a similar one. Our film is different in a way as Billy also does some skating, which in other films most likely they just stand around in crowds in corners of the streets causing trouble, however this is the part we tried to make them look better that teens are not only about trouble. However the typical way is the stabbing, which is very common in such films, knife is tool used by the teenagers, however guns etc that is more used in thriller films, and you won't see a teenager with a gun, it’s a bit rare.

Our Title font we found on the internet which really appealed to us, its called Toy soldier. It's sort of like graffiti, which matches our Urban/gangster/crime film. As all the graffiti on the walls of the under tunnel, and the skating park. This refers back to the teenagers groups that hang around and Abuse the neighbourhoods.

The opening of our film is Billy Walking to meet Pete, and gets the package, which then already right away lets the audience know that it's a film similar to all the other crime, gangster films as it involves hoodies, and by giving the package they already get it that it’s something like drugs. Then it’s a bit of urban style all the skating also shows a good side of teenagers, they do something they are passionate about.

Added Music

Today

We have finally added the music to our film. Its Snoop Dogg ft Dr Dre- Still Dre.

We also have added our titles to the film today. We wrote the names of the actors down first. Billy O, Pete Slade and Tom turrel. Also we added the names of the producers. Produced by then we wrote our names down Fabienne Gould, Azza Ahmed and finally Tom Turrell. And in the end we also wrote; A film4 Production. Then Common Enemy as the film is called. Just one more thing left to do to our film, this is at the start of the clip we have the sound of the wind blowing to loudly, and we want to decrease the sound just a little so it suits the other scenes.

Final Editing

Today

Today we imported the filmed scene of yesterday onto the computer, and started editing it. It looked really good, and we discovered we really didn’t need the blood bit. We finally have finished editing the film itself, however of course we still have to add the sounds to it, and the titles and finally the name of the film.

So far we quite happy with the clips we have edited, and at the moment thinking about the sounds. We have already chosen a sort of graffiti style font of the internet and imported it to our clip, so next time we add our titles its ready.

End part of filming

Yesterday

Yesterday we finally went down after college, and filmed the end part of our film. It went pretty good; we got some good shots, and a few different angles. In this end part, we had the leader of the drug dealers, come down and meet the skater boy, then he refused to give him the money and the bad man (Tom) stabbed the skater boy (Billy) to death. This scene was taken down under the Redcliffe Hill underpass.

We included quite a few of high angles, and also some low angles. We were also going to add red ink to make it look more effective, as the blood running down from (Billy) as he dies, however the battery just ran out.

How does your media product represent particular Social Groups?

To relate our film intro theme, to a similar British TV drama, such as skins, the younger generations, which are around every corner street, causing trouble, damaging streets, people's property, taking drugs, getting murdered. However we didn't make them look as bad, we just had the boy skating enjoying his activity, handed drugs by the man, later got in trouble for getting involved an other people stabbed him. This kind of obsession is all over the media, films, news, TV drama's etc. This is the thought of the younger generations. Such as Muslims being related to terrorist, teens are blamed for all trouble.

So the major amount of people who are aimed to watch our film, are from the age of 15 up to maybe 19.      Our characters in our film, are only men which, is also typical in the main films such as green zone, woman wouldn’t want to watch a film where it involves killing and drugs etc. so most of our audience would be young men. Billy in our film is the main characters, but however at the end he doesn’t look like it he just look like the delivery boy, and then gets killed, all of this is a bit similar to the film shifty a low budget film.

Its hasn’t got the same story line however, it's similar in as the atmosphere, the drugs, the hooded bad guys. Also the streets they are out on, and getting their selves in trouble, Like ion ours Billy get stabbed because he they bad man didn’t want to give him the money, however in Shifty they are just lucky they didn’t get arrested or killed, even thought many people attempted to kill them, and they have been chased by the police quite a lot of times. Also when they go under the underpass, which we included as well which makes it look rougher.

In most crime/gangster films all the young characters wear the baggy hoody with the low jeans, this is also one of the things we kept the same, Which is also Stereotypical In the media now, that all the young teens with the hoodies are the bad people that cause the trouble around the neighbourhood.

Storyboard

This is one of our storyboards we did, however we coudn't upload the 2nd one as it didn't let us do it.
This is just some rough sketches and ideas, that we thought of. It hasn't have to stay like this, we could always make changes to it. This is just we thought of and try and see how it will look like.

Monday, March 8, 2010

Today we did some more editing to the things we have filmed on Thursday, we have basically finished with editing, however we didn’t get to film the end part yet, when the boy gets stabbed by the bad guy, because as we were not able to make it in the weekend. Hopefully we will have to do this either today after school or tomorrow, depends on the weather. Also we discovered we could add some match on action in the clips were the boy is skating to make it look more dramatic, this also we will have to do in the next couple of days depending on the weather.

Our Chosen Genre

Why we chose to do A Crime/gangster Theme

The idea of us doing a crime/gangster movie is that the films such as kidulthood/adulthood have really inspired us. We thought we do something about what teenagers go through in the real life now. All the crime the drugs, theft and murder. This has really appealed to us so we thought we want to make something similar to inspire all the other teenagers.

The opening of the kidulthood trailer contains a flash of everything. Drugs, alcohol, sex, drug dealers etc this is what the media thinks of teenagers now a days. The hoodies, especially when it comes to black people with the hoodies on and the baggy jeans, they straight away accuse them to be gunmen, drug dealers etc. so when you think teenagers you right away think of all the things I have mentioned.

It contains a lot of different shots including quite a lot of montage editing

Some Editing

Editing

Today we did some editing to the scenes we filmed yesterday; we repeated quite a lot of scenes, so if they didn’t look accurate we could always choose from the others. We also got to the point were we are still deciding what music to include. But as one of our group members was off ill today, we didn't do it yet, so we could ask him if he agrees with the idea of our chosen music theme.

Filming

Filming

Yesterday we did some more filming down Deanlane Skate Park. We got quite far, the only scene that is left to film, now is the knife attack part. Which would only take about 10 to 15 minutes to film. Hopefully we might be doing this in the weekend, to get finished with the filming and continue with editing.

Film Opening

This was also one of the films that has inspired us

 Domino..
I am going to analyse how camera, editing, sound and mise en scene are used as conventions in the action thriller Domino.

The extract that I’ve watched uses a lot of close ups, which build the tension.
At the start of this extract, they included the close up on the police woman; this showed her reaction, and emotions. It showed us the strength she had of being in charge, however it also showed us the anger and pressure she was put into. Also another close up was on the woman that was wanted for crime, this close up showed the fear, anger in her face, and we could see the eyeliner running down her face sweating. The final close up was focused on the old man on the ground covered in his own blood, he was calling the name of the woman he was with she must be related to him in some way,  he looked  frightened  that if she got shot, and tried to convince her to put down her weapon before she got shot. A close up lets the viewers focus on the character emotions as the background isn’t visible. There was also a crane shot at the second scene at the very end of this extract, it shows the sunset behind the mountains which showed what time of day it was shot, then moved straight of to a long shot onto a different scene which showed a stereotypical American empty farm, land, this shows the setting of the scene.

After the first scene right away, they started with the names fading in and played this rapping style gangster music. This gives the viewer a hint of what the film might be about. The stereotypical way of thinking how something is linked with the music. This could be known as sound motif. The type of music that played at the start identifies, the gangs, youth, crime generation of how people link it with, when you say rap that’s the first idea that comes up. Also during the introduction of the film they included images of some different scenes in the film, whilst this was going on they included voice overs of some of the characters, saying things such as “I have to start at the beginning” “America”, it also gave bits away of the film’s plot. Even the song they played. The rappers kept repeating “trying to make a living”. You get the feeling of the stereotypical American, crime, men films of selling drugs on the street to make a good life for their selves.

This extract contained guns, drugs, alcohol, cars and sun glasses. It’s the stereotypical action film.
Also the scenes that came up we could see woman in nightclubs, men with guns it’s a dominant men film. You could also identify that it is a modern film, the fading in names glowing colours which again represents the night life in America. The way the woman dressed up in clubs and the also the music is modern. The lighting at the first scene was added a slightly tilt of yellow; this is that the connotations that colours carry are important showing the atmosphere in the scene.

The film is conveying to the audience by the use of real life issues; by this the audience can also relate it to their own life experience. In addition this would help the audience on how to deal with some of the issues represented in the film.

Changes

Changes

it has come to our attention that we believe that the scene in which we planned to have the boy shot might be to difficult to film and it might be hard to get our hands on a realistic gun, and sound and so we have changed the weapon to a knife, we are also going to film this scene from quite a far away shot in the hope that it will look more realistic and not unoriginal. We have also had to change the setting of the scene as we have not been able to find a building to match our needs and so we have picked another setting, a dark dingy underpass which in our group’s opinion is better as it is more fitting the urban theme of our opening.

First Day Of Filming

Day 7

We had our fist day of filming a few days ago last Friday, the results were quite pleasing. First we had a problem as in the opening of our film we were going to borrow a friend’s car, but unfortunately he could not make it, so we had to make some scene changes. instead we had the drug dealer give the boy the package by foot and it worked quite well, every thing went smoothly, we all did some filming, thankfully the weather and background noise was really good, especially the sound of the skateboard along the ground. Our chosen settings were also well picked and we had no unwanted interference, one thing that we could have improved on was the angle of the camera as in some shots they are a little off we also messed up our first shot as it was accidently cut short and so it will have to be redone, but all in all the group worked together well and our chosen actor was very natural on camera. The next thing to do is to edit what we have filmed so far, which we done some today.

Below are some pictures of where we set our film.

Skate park down Deanlane..
